Driver strikes CHP patrol car directing traffic around dead deer

A driver struck a California Highway Patrol car that was attempting to direct traffic around a dead deer on U.S. Highway 101 outside of Sausalito on Friday morning, according to CHP.

The patrol car was controlling traffic on northbound 101 south of the Sausalito/Marin City off-ramp shortly before 9 a.m. by weaving through lanes with its emergency lights on.

Once the traffic behind the patrol car had slowed down, the officer moved to the center of the freeway.

The 20-year-old driver of a Ford Taurus in the far left lane sped up and attempted to pass the patrol vehicle on the left, according to CHP.

At the same time, the officer found the deer blocking one of the left lanes, and moved the car to block the lane to facilitate moving the deer.

The Ford Taurus struck the left front of the patrol car, causing minor damage.

The officer left her vehicle and stopped traffic by hand to move the dead deer to the right shoulder. She had the driver of the Taurus move the car out of the road and regular traffic resumed.

"Unfortunately, this is an all too common occurrence. Some motorists do not understand what we are doing when we drive across all lanes back and forth with our emergency lights on," CHP Sgt. Marcus Bartholomew said in a statement.

State law requires all vehicles to stay at least 300 feet behind any emergency vehicle with emergency lighting activated, according to the CHP.

Hundreds attend fundraiser for Sierra LaMar search efforts

A fundraiser Friday night in Gilroy gave the public a chance to show their support for the family of missing teenager Sierra Lamar.

Live music and dancing at Jason-Stephens Winery provided some much-needed relief in what has been a stressful week for the girl's family and supporters.

Some of those who attended the event didn't even know the Sierra or her family, but said their pain speaks to all parents.

"It's very disheartening," said Cathy Cano of San Jose. "You worry all the time about every child."

Those attending Friday's fundraiser were asked to donate $20 each to help fund search-related expenses.

Sierra's father said the Santa Clara County Sheriff's announcement this week that the suspect in her disappearance is charged with murder was difficult to hear.

"That was the toughest part of this week was hearing that for us," Steve Lamar told KTVU. "We don't want to hear that and we're pretty much not going to accept it."

Marc Klaas, whose own daughter Polly Klaas was kidnapped and murdered, said a female body discovered in Pleasanton Thursday also took a toll on everyone involved in the search.

Investigators said it's unlikely the body is Sierra.

"It's such a horrible situation on every level," Klaas said.

Friday's fundraiser brought out hundreds of people.

The next volunteer search was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Occupy protesters rally to support man arrested in confrontation with police

Nearly 100 people rallied late into the night in Oakland Friday, angry over the arrest of an Occupy protester who got in the face of police earlier this week.

"When Chris is under attack, what do we do? Stand up fight back," was the new rallying cry for Occupy Oakland. The group demanded justice for Chris Moreland Friday night.

Protesters said Oakland police arrested Moreland shortly after a confrontation with officers outside an Oakland church.

Chief Howard Jordan held a community meeting at the church to respond to questions about the killing of 18-year-old Alan Blueford, who was shot by police earlier this month.

Police said Blueford pointed a gun before an officer shot him, but many weren't satisfied with that explanation.

Khalid Shakur also confronted police after the meeting.

"He wasn't answering the questions of the people," said Shakur referring to Jordan.

While protesters said Moreland was arrested for a felony, the charge was reduced to misdemeanor for disturbing the peace when he faced a judge Friday.

"Everyone was practicing their first amendment rights, freedom of speech," Shakur said.

"I understand the desire to have questions answered and I understand the community's concern,” said Jordan in a statement he released.  “ I have shared both with the Blueford family and the community what information I can at this point.  I stand by my commitment to ensure a fair and thorough investigation is completed."

Moreland has posted bail and was expected to be released late Friday night.
